There are many reasons why your pets may not be eating. If your pet is not eating, his or her health may suffer. This may lead to severe weight loss, sickness and eventual death. Identifying the reason why he or she is not eating is very important in order for you to help him or her get better.

If your pet has not been eating well for the last couple of days, you should consult a veterinarian. On the other hand prior to going to the veterinarian there are a few things you must first take into account in order for your vet to better help out your dog, cat or rabbit find out why your furbaby is not eating.

When your pet is not eating anything or is eating very little, chances are he is not feeling very well. He would have low energy and would feel scared and be unable to show the same energy that he once have had. There are many factors why your pet may not be eating. Identifying them can help save his life.

1. Tooth and gum problem


  If your pet is suffering from tooth or gum problem, it is very likely that he will refuse eating. He may be trying to eat little by little as well or eat very slowly. You can check his gums and teeth to make sure. If his gums are very pink, then this is a sign of gum disease or gingivitis. On the other hand if his teeth are also yellow, they may also have rotten inside. His breath my also be an indication to his oral health.

Pets are not unlike people. They also need oral hygiene, everyday just like us humans. Most humans however neglect this part of the hygiene of their pet. Pets normally have long sharp teeth that humans always try to stay away from and so we never brushed their teeth as a puppy or a kitten.

2. Kidney or Urinary Disease or Infection

When your furbaby is suffering from inability to pee, he or she will likely have a fever. He will be very lethargic and be unable to move a lot. As a result he or she may lose any energy to eat. If you observe that he dribbles as he pees or rarely pees, then this is a red flag that may indicate that he has a kidney problem. This requires immediate attention and so bringing him to your vet right away is needed.

3. Old Age

When your cat or dog is becoming old, he will likely not have the capacity to eat like he did before. His gums may have already eroded and his teeth may already be decaying. Aside from that his digestive system may already be weaker. He may need a special diet in order to help him cope with his aging body. Older dogs may not be able to eat as well as before, just like humans who grow older too. They become more lethargic and their body ache too. Giving them the proper attention and diet can help improve the quality of their life as they age.

4. Worm Infestation

If your pet has stomach and intestinal worms, chances are he is finding it difficult to eat because he has severe stomach pain. He may even experience diarrhea, vomiting and dizziness. His worms may lead to infections. He may have lesions in his stomach, intestines and his heart may be affected too.

5. Tick and Flea Problems

Ticks and Fleas drink up your pet’s blood. This causes severe itching when they suck up blood and also causes severe lethargy. In some cases, this also leads to seizures and paralysis. When your pet cannot eat, it may be a symptom of a flea or tick issue.

On the other hand, some tick and flea solutions such as chemical formulations may actually cause serious effects on your pet on top of getting rid of the ticks and fleas. These can cause side effects such as dizziness, vomiting, lethargy, lack of appetite and many more. Sometimes, instead of doing good they lead to more harm.

6. Change of Food

Simple things such as the change in his diet can make your dog or cat lose his or appetite. Slowly introducing a new kind of food is the key. Sometimes he will not like a certain kind of food at all. Do not force your pet to like a certain type of food because this will bring more harm than good. Proper adjustment is needed if you ever plan to change his or her diet.

7. He May Be Under Stress

Have your recently have had a new pet or a new person in your house? Did you move the furniture? Or have you moved to a new place? Stress affects your dog or cat’s diet as well. They may feel depressed, anxious and fearful causing them lose their appetite.

Observe him closely. At first try to give him soft food in order for him just to have something in his or her stomach. But bringing him to the vet can help save his life. If the pet is having renal or liver failure bringing him today versus bringing him tomorrow can spell life or death.

You should also watch out for signs of poisoning. He may have been poisoned by anti flea or anti tick agents. If this happens wash him well and rush him to the vet.

If your dog or cat dislikes the food that you recently gave him, try to incorporate play into his meal time to help him adjust to the food. Always remember to give him the time and attention he or she needs because eating is a great sign of another problem.

Your vet can really help you find out what is wrong with your pet. Always monitor his eating and drinking habits. Your pet is not just an animal who lives in your house. He or she is your family member who depends on you to keep him safe and healthy.
